"NO, IT'S REAL. I SAW IT ON THE INTERNETS!"

Home Computer of The Future!

The Internet and its attendant tools for graphic manipulation and immediate publishing have taken pranks, misrepresentation, and outright deception to levels we wouldn't have imagined a decade or two ago, and for many of us our skepticism still hasn't caught up. Sometimes it's malicious, but sometimes, it's pretty damned funny.

The picture above started making the rounds in 2004, purported to be from a 1954 Popular Mechanics article showcasing what a home computer might look like in the year 2004. Even current Popular Mechanics' editors admitted to being initially taken in by the picture--before a fruitless visit to the archives, that is, and some follow-up investigation.

The picture was a hoax, created for a "Photoshop contest" on fark.com, and quickly took on a life of its own on the Web. The original photo was of this old Navy submarine console, converted to black and white, and with an old teletype and Eisenhower-era TV and gentleman added for "authenticity".
